Position: Protection Officer
Reporting To: Manager of Security
Location: Ottawa, Canada
General Objective:
Under the general supervision of the Manager of Security, controls access to and movement within Company premises with the assistance of a computerized access control system, conducts building security checks, prepares occurrence reports, mans a Central Monitoring Station, receives and forwards correspondence, follows established contingency plans during an emergency, controls and regulates parking, ensures the external security of Company premises, and performs other related duties.
Responsibilities, Duties and Tasks:
Control access to and movement within company premises with assistance of a computerized access control system:
- Restricts access to building to authorized persons, visitors and private contractors, in accordance with Standing Orders.
- Mans certain Security Stations designed to control movement at specific strategic locations within the building.
- Enforces Company security procedures, regulations and policies.
- Checks incoming and outgoing packages, boxes, bundles and all similar material.
- Maintains security precautions designed to safeguard the Company premises and material from outside thread and inside loss due to theft, negligence or fired hazard.
- Responds to incidents, taking appropriate actions and reporting procedures.
Conducts building security checks:
- Patrols the Company premises (145 Richmond Road & 881 Lady Ellen Place)
- Conducts security inspections of offices and departments
- Conducts fire and safety hazard checks
Mans a Central Monitoring Station:
- Monitors fire and intrusion alarm annunciating panel boards, CCTV video monitors, telephone and radio communication systems
- Ensures that all systems are in proper working order
Receives and forwards correspondence:
- Prepares and/or reads the Daily Occurrence Book (DOB)
- Writes memos and occurrence reports and completes appropriate forms
- Processes lost and found items
- Prepares and submits reports and returns as required by the Director of Security
Follows established contingency plans plans during an emergency:
- Responds correctly and rapidly to an emergency situation including fire and intrusion emergencies
- Informs the Central Monitoring Station about the nature of an emergency and recommends follow-up action
- Conducts building searches
- Provides instructions and assistance to building occupants
- Takes required actions with regard to his/her area of responsibility during an emergency
Controls and regulates parking:
- Patrols the Company parking areas and regulates parking to authorized users
- Reports to the Central Monitoring Station the presence of vehicles and other objects that might present a threat to the Company
- Reports any deficiencies that are noticed on signs, fences and lighting equipment
Performs other related duties:
- Provides assistance and/or information by answering telephone inquiries
- Performs escort duties and participates in other related security functions
Qualifications (Knowledge, Skilss and Abilities):
Diploma in Security Management, Police Foundations or a related field
1+ years of practical work experience in a security role
Good communication skills in English (written and oral), French and other language additional assets
Ability to prepare written documents in English with clearly organized thoughts with proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar
Skills in interpreting and applying security procedures and regulations
Skills in recognizing unusual incidents requiring immediate action and preparing applicable reports
Basic computer skills (using databases, data entry, Microsoft Word)
Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services
Ability to work cooperatively, courteously, yet firmly with executive, employees, visitors and general public
Ability to multi-task
Ability to maintain composure, keeping emotions in check, controlling anger, and avoiding aggressive behaviour, even in very difficult situations
Strong understanding of deadlines and commitment to schedules
Performs well under pressure
Valid certification in CPR Level C
Valid First Aid certification
Valid driver's license
Ability to obtain and maintain Government of Canada Secret Level II Security Clearance
Ability to work various shifts (including nights, weekends, holidays) and overtime
